KZN SAPS arrest three for cell phone tower battery theft

During their getaway, the vehicle flipped and one of the suspects was injured in the crash.

THREE men were arrested in Inchanga yesterday (26 January) for stealing a battery from a nearby cell phone tower.

KZN SAPS spokesman, Colonel Thembeka Mbele said Inchanga SAPS received a report of a break in at a cell phone tower on Rosemary Street just before 10am yesterday.

A team from the local SAPS raced to the scene and, as they arrived, reported seeing three men leave the site and sped off in their vehicle.

“A chase ensued as the suspects fled from the scene. The driver of the vehicle lost control,” said Mblele.

The vehicle, that contained four suspects, rolled. Two men were arrested at the crash site, one of whom was injured and transported to hospital. Two others fled into dense bush near the crash site.

“A third suspect was later arrested with the assistance of a security company. The mountainous area was searched by police, with no sign of the fourth suspect,” said Mbele.

Mbele said the fourth suspect is still at large and the search is ongoing. Police recovered a battery, that belongs to a large mobile communications company, with a street value of R19 500. The three suspects will appear in the Camperdown Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
