Durban officer helps evacuate commuters from burning bus
The fire is believed to have started in the engine and fortunately no one was injured.
A POLICEMAN and Westville resident, who was on his way to work, stopped to assist when he noticed a municipal bus on fire on Umgeni Road yesterday afternoon, 23 January.
According to a post shared on the Westville info group Facebook page, the driver of the bus managed to open the hydraulic doors which were miraculously still working when the officer arrived at the scene.
“The brave officer entered the burning bus to help calm and evacuate the people,” read the post.
eThekwini Municipality Durban Metro Police and the Durban Metro Fire department were called to the scene.
While Metro Police managed the traffic, the fire department extinguished the blaze.
It is believed the fire spread within four minutes from the engine compartment to the entire bus.
