Malawian national accused of murdering Kloof man due back in court

The man, who was working as a gardener in Westville until his arrest in October, is due to return to court tomorrow.

THE 21-year-old Malawian man, accused of murdering Kloof resident, Leighton Agg (42), is due to appear before a magistrate in F court at Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (21 January).

The accused remains in custody where he has been since his arrest in October after the body of Agg  was found near Pietermaritzburg.

He abandoned his bail application at the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (27 October).

The case was remanded for further investigation according to the spokesman for the KZN National Prosecuting Authority, Natasha Kara and a new date was set for this week.

 

Body found

Agg’s body was found at the Umgeni River bridge on the Ottosbluff Road, outside of Pietermaritzburg on 7 October, at which time an arrest was made by the SAPS.

The accused, who was at first believed to be a contractor, appeared in court facing a charge of murder as well as additional charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and housebreaking for the first time on Friday, 9 October, and has appeared three more times before the end of 2020.

 

Charge sheet

According to the charge sheet, the man is accused of murdering Agg by “assaulting him using a hammer and electric cord and also stabbing him with a knife.”

The charge sheet pertaining to the robbery and housebreaking describes items allegedly stolen, which include a laptop, two cellphones, Agg’s wallet with bank cards and an undisclosed amount of money as well as Agg’s vehicle.
