Housebreaking suspects arrested while shopping in Upper Highway

The two men were caught while trying to run to their getaway vehicle after a shopping trip.

TWO men, linked to a housebreaking in Kloof, were arrested while they were out shopping in the Upper Highway area on Tuesday morning.

Blue Security’s armed-response officers were dispatched to a Kloof property in the early hours of Tuesday morning after multiple alarm activations.

“On arrival, the officer observed two suspects on the property escape by jumping over the fence. The trespassers had been seen earlier driving a white Toyota Quantum,” said Blue Security’s community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios.

One of the members from the company’s Community Crime Prevention Units (CCPU) was patrolling on the M13 and spotted the same vehicle parked opposite a supermarket.

“Receiving backup from fellow CCPU officers, the suspects were successfully apprehended while they were trying to race to their getaway vehicle,” Mathios said.

The two men were arrested and a case of trespassing is being investigated by Pinetown SAPS.

In another incident, a Gillitts housebreaking suspect was apprehended during a joint operation between the security company, community members and the neighbourhood watch.

Housebreaking suspects were seen fence-hopping near the Gillitts Railway Station.

“The suspects gained access to a property by forcing open the burglar guards and entering the home. Various items of value, including a TV and microwave, were taken,” Mathios said.

Members of the community, who assisted in locating the suspects, found that holes were cut in fences for easy access points and escape routes.

“An abandoned property near to where the housebreaking had occurred was also thoroughly searched while the second suspect was being sought by Blue Security’s CCPU,” Mathios said.

One of the men was caught and the other is still at large.
