Precious water wasted in Mariannhill

The water has been gushing out since 13 December and the issue has been reported on numerous occasions.

WHILE many communities are forced to live without access to clean water, this precious resource is being wasted in Westgate Place, Mariannhill.

Business owners and staff around the area, who have reported the problem, said they have run out of options to address the issue as the water has been gushing out since 13 December.

“I came back to work on Monday, 4 January and to my surprise this has not been fixed. It has been three weeks, how can they let precious water get wasted like this,” said Mike van Rensberg.

According to the staff, some plumbers did visit the area when the matter was first reported and promised to return the following day, but never did.

Van Rensberg said the company was built on a landfill site and the amount of water flowing onto their premises can cause damage to the concrete.

“There are new cars here, who will pay for the damage? There are people who are in need of water while it is being wasted here and no one seems to care. This is what frustrates me the most,” added van Rensberg.

eThekwini Municipality said they are investigating the matter.
