Police recover stolen copper cables hidden in New Germany scrapyard

Police recovered 102 kg of copper cables and 92kg of other cables hidden in a hole.

COPPER cables, which belong to Transnet, Prasa and the eThekwini Municipality were found hidden at a scrapyard in New Germany.

KZN police spokesperson, Capt Nqobile Gwala said police officers from the Rapid Rail Police Unit were conducting operations in Pinetown on Wednesday, 6 January when they received information about a scrapyard dealing in stolen copper cables.

“The team proceeded to the identified scrapyard that is situated on Rawat Road in the New Germany. Upon searching the premises, police discovered a hole in the yard,” said Gwala.

The cables were found hidden in that hole, 102 kg of copper cables and 92 kg of other cables were recovered.

“A 27-year-old suspect was placed under arrest for possession of stolen property. He is expected to appear in the Pinetown Magistrate’s Court today (7 January),” said Gwala.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula praised the team for the recovery of the copper cables.

“We are appealing to community members to continue working hand-in-hand with the police in the fight against the theft of copper cables in our province,” he said.
