Thieves steal thousands worth of Gillitts church equipment

The small church in Gillitts serve a very impoverished community who cannot afford to help raise funds.

MEMBERS of a Gillitts church were shocked beyond belief when their equipment, worth thousands of Rands, were stolen.

The Ajalon Church is a small church in the rural village of Gillitts and the money was raised over many years to purchase the equipment.

“Not only did they steal the equipment, the criminals also ripped off the cables which left the church with no electricity,” said Pastor Joseph Chengiah.

The church, which has been in existence for 52 years, serves an impoverished community who cannot afford to help raise funds.

“Many are pensioners who support their families with their grant money. We spent many years raising funds to buy this equipment,” said Chengiah.

A computer, sound desk, speakers, microphones and cables were among the stolen items.

Chengiah said this has left him and his wife traumatised. “A church is supposed to be a sacred place. How can criminals plunder it? We are in dire need to replace the stolen items and this is a sad situation. We appeal to good Samaritans to sponsor some of these items or donate any item that will help us to facilitate our worship,” said a concerned Chengiah.

Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Capt Linzi Smith confirmed the incident and said a case of business burglary has been opened at the station.

People who wish to help can contact Pastor Joseph Chengiah on 082 312 1816.
