IN early March this year, the Highway Shellhole embarked on a refurbishment project for its 15-tonne, 70-year-old tank.
The KwaZulu-Natal Parabat Veterans Organisation, who share the facilities of the Highway Shellhole, were behind the initiative to transport the tank to Hillcrest in 2018.
While the dedicated members of the Shellhole do not want to have the tank up and running, they did want to refurbish it and called on residents in the area to help with the daring project.

According to the chairman of the tank committee, Adrain Glanvill, the team still needs to source a high pressure cleaner to strip the paint from the tracks and the underside of the tank.
He noted that the project will be suspended over Christmas and will begin again in the new year.
