Malvern music producer’s track sparks latest dance trend

The Malvern rapper, who used to live in Malvern Child and Youth Care Centre, might soon be 'Tik Tok famous' for his collaboration on this track.

AN AMAPIANO anthem, created by two youngsters in Malvern, is slowly blowing up around South Africa with TikTok challenges and dance moves being shared in response to the infectious beat.

Music producer Jashen Joel Govindsamy , 21, is better known by his fans as Jashmir.

He and former Malvern Child and Youth Care Centre resident, Sphesihle Mhlanga , 20, who goes by the stage name of Verge The Rapper, collaborated to create the track to inspire people to have fun despite the dire circumstances of 2020, the year that, to put it mildly, didn’t go according to plan.

“We created this sound for the festive period for people to enjoy despite the current restrictions we’re facing.

Basically to uplift spirits and keep the traditional December mood in SA,” said Jashmir, an award winning music producer responsible for the major influence of Amapiano on TikTok with his # AMAiPhone ringtone remix and the #AmaSpongebob gaining major traction all over the globe.

“This was the first Amapiano song I’ve laid vocals on and I can guarantee it won’t be the last,” confirmed Verge. “Jashmir put me up to the ultimate test.  As a young, growing musician pushing my limits is something I really enjoy,” he said with a broad smile.

“We hope to see more people taking part in the Challenge #KeDezemba that’s currently going viral and we urge Durban to stand with us through this festive time and beyond into the new year,” explained the rapper, who has been featured in the Queensburgh News a few times from when he first started making music in 2018 and also featured in the Highway Mail while living in Pinetown.

“My ultimate goal, as a musician, is to spark enlightenment in people’s minds,” said Verge.  “Amapiano has helped me connect on a whole different level.”
