KwaNdengezi centre for the disabled receives a festive surprise

The centre has suffered greatly due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Boxer donated R12 000 in Boxer Gift Cards to the 30 families who have children at the centre.

KWANDENGEZI resident, Nokuthemba Gumede provides a place of safety and comfort for 30 children.

For Gumede, looking after the children is the most important duty in her life.

Inherited from her mother, the Sonke Care Centre for the Disabled is a place of hope for many children in need.

Despite her incredible work, times have been tough and the centre has suffered greatly due to the Covid-19 pandemic and national lockdown and the children have been suffering.

Boxer surprised Gumede and her centre with a visit and donation, ensuring that, at least for now, food would be down on the list of worries for her children.

Boxer donated R12 000 in Boxer Gift Cards to the 30 families who have children at the centre.

A surprise hamper was also given to Gumede, who had only one wish; that the children she cares for could eat with their families without worry over the festive period.

“I am so glad that my children can now go home with food and a smile. Things have not been great lately and support has been hard to come by, so this donation is much appreciated, thank you,” said Gumede.

As a token of appreciation for what Gumede does for the children, the centre received a massive, custom made cake for the children to tuck into.

One of the children, who sat meekly in the front of the classroom (which is in dire need of repairs) immediately took out his colouring book and turned to a page with a cake drawing he had just finished colouring in, and began crying.

“We are humbled and truly honoured to be able to support Sonke and Gumede who, despite the challenges she faces daily, is able to care for these amazing children,” said Boxer marketing director, Andrew Mills.

Sonke Care Centre is in urgent need of assistance to ensure that Gumede can continue to care for the many children under her watch in Kwandengezi. To assist, call 073 351 9636.
