Breedt begins new chapter at Thomas More College

Anny Breedt will fill the role of foundation phase headmistress at the Kloof-based school from 2021.

WITH 18 years of experience in the education sphere, Anny Breedt is excited to join the Thomas More College (TMC) family as its foundation phase headmistress from 2021.

The soon-to-be Kloof resident spoke to the Highway Mail about her hopes and dreams for the learners who will be in her care, the reason she chose to become an educator and her biggest fear.

What inspired you to become an educator?
I worked part-time as a teaching assistant in London (UK), and was inspired by the teacher I worked with to follow a career in education. Her passion, kindness and dedication inspired me most. I enrolled for a B.Ed that same year.

What are your future plans at TMC?
I am honoured to follow in the footsteps of Deni Hornsey and hope to build on the strong foundation that has been established. I plan to build a relationship of trust with my staff, parents and learners, and expand on the teaching and learning experience in the foundation phase. I am passionate about the personal, professional and leadership development of teachers and will integrate this into my planning. Inspired and fulfilled educators, equals happy, well-rounded children who love learning and going to school.

As one of the school’s new leaders, how do you plan on entering 2021 with the pandemic in mind?
I plan on proceeding with all regular school activities, while bearing in mind all safety protocols as they present by January 2021. Social development is a big part of growing and learning in foundation phase and it is vital we provide our children with a safe environment for interaction, play and establishing routine.

Where is the first international destination you would like to travel to?
Dubai. My brother and his family live in Dubai and this year we missed our annual visit. I can’t wait to hug them all and to spend time with my little nephews.

What three items are always within your reach?
Frixion Pens, lipstick, and snacks but, over the last months, it’s been a case of masks, sanitiser and a thermometer.

If you could forget one book for the chance to read it again for the very first time, what would it be?
438 Days, the biography of José Salvador Alverenga who survived 438 days lost and adrift in the Pacific Ocean. It’s an incredible story of survival and hope. I would choose to forget it and read it again, only to relive the excitement of finding out what happens next.

What is your biggest fear?
Roller coasters.

What is your favourite holiday of the year?
Definitely Easter!

What is your favourite part about your career?
Impacting lives and seeing children grow into young, mature adults. There is nothing more fulfilling than to meet a past pupil and hear their stories of success, knowing that in some small way, you played a part.

What is your top pet peeve?
A disregard for sincerely saying “please” and “thank you.”

If you could have one mystical creature as a pet, what would you choose, and why?
Falcor from Neverending Story. He is both pet and Uber. I’ll never be stuck in traffic again!

What is the most unusual meal you have made/eaten?
Porcupine dumplings at Foliage, in Franschhoek.

If you could meet one celebrity for a cup of coffee, who would it be?
If the royals count as celebrities, I definitely won’t mind a cuppa with Queen Elizabeth.

What is the top item on your bucket list?
Pioneering an Independent School. With a humble and grateful heart, I have had the privilege of ticking this off.
