Motorists beware: Criminals strike on busy highways

N3 east, between Pavilion off-ramp and the EB Cloete interchange, was among the hotspots identified during a community support team patrol.

WITH lockdown regulations being relaxed, more people are travelling and motorists are warned to be extra vigilant, especially as the festive season approaches.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios said criminals are creating scenarios which cause damage to vehicles and force motorists to come to a stop on busy highways, where criminals are lying in wait to strike.

Mathios said more and more incidents are occurring which have been caused by placing rocks on key routes.

“Although the locations can change at any given time, the Blue Security Durban community support team patrolled major routes at 3.30am, on Thursday morning, in order to pinpoint some of the hotspots in and around greater Durban,” said Mathios.

These units were joined by ProAct neighbourhood watch volunteers and the following hotspots were identified:

*N2 north and south at Chesterville

*N3 east between Pavilion off-ramp and the EB Cloete interchange

If you are a victim anywhere in the Durban area, Mathios advised motorists to do the following:

1) If your vehicle develops a puncture try to keep driving on your flat wheel to a safe location and as far as you can from point of impact

2) Notify 10111 immediately and give a description of your car, including your number plate and location

3) Remain in your (locked) vehicle until help arrives

4) Avoid unnecessary usage of your mobile phone, which you will need for emergency communication

5) If you have a Blue Security App activate it and the control rim will facilitate your GPS location and activate first responders.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
