Queensburgh man arrested for alleged sexual assault of 5-year-old girl

The officer reportedly found the man trying to end his own life after allegedly being caught half-naked on top of a five-year-old girl.

MALVERN SAPS recently  arrested a man who had been trying to commit suicide after he was found half naked with his five-year-old neighbour.

The report of the arrest came at a time when the country is commemorating the 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence campaign.

Malvern SAPS communications officer, Sgt Sthembile Kheswa, said, “Warrant officer Basil Munsamy was patrolling alone, attending to complaints in the community, when he suddenly received a sexual assault complaint.”

Sexual assault

Kheswa said Munsamy interviewed a woman who claimed her five-year-old daughter had been sexually assaulted by a man who lives on their property.

“She stated that she had been looking for her five-year-old daughter because she couldn’t find her,” explained Kheswa.

The mother decided to go and speak to the male tenant living on her premises to ask him if he had seen the little girl.

According to Kheswa, the mother alleged that when she opened the door to the tenant’s room she saw her daughter lying on the bed, half naked, underneath the man who was also partially clothed.

“The mother screamed and the suspect immediately got off the child,” said Kheswa, adding that the mother then grabbed her child and contacted Malvern SAPS to report the incident.  The suspect didn’t flee the scene but instead locked himself inside his room,” she said.

“W/O Munsamy went to the tenant’s room and found the suspect trying to commit suicide,” said Kheswa.

“He immediately placed the suspect under arrest for sexual assault and contacted an ambulance for treatment,” she said.

Kheswa said the 45-year-old man was taken to RK Khan Hospital for further treatment.

“After a few hours he was discharged from hospital and detained in the police cells,” she added.

UPDATED with updated information when police confirmed the arrest didn’t take place on 25 November as the story originally seemed to imply.
