Westville NPO creates jobs with flea market

Church Alliance for Social Transformation (CAST) is inviting the public to support a flea market which aim is to empower and uplift local entrepreneurs.

WESTVILLE NPO, Church Alliance for Social Transformation (CAST), will host a flea market at the Westville Civic Centre on Saturday, 28 November.

The market will be held to promote one of the NPO’s programmes, the Local Economic Development, as they work with under-resourced communities in 12 townships around Durban.

CAST fundraiser and PRO, George Mwaura said their organisation has been registered and operational since 2010.

“We partner with local churches in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng to empower and spiritually-uplift underprivileged and under-resourced communities through our main programmes of Nutrition and Health, Youth Development, Child Literacy and Creative Arts, and Local Economic Development.”

He said each year, they host a series of courses to empower people who are then equipped with skills to assist them start their own businesses and earn an income.

“After the courses, which include mostly hand work such as sewing, bead work and crochet, the participants then graduate and receive certificates. Those who start their own businesses are usually paired with a mentor to guide them,” said Mwaura.

With the Covid-19 impact of job losses, Mwaura said more people are wanting to start their businesses and urged the public to support the market.

“Although we are focussing on making a market platform for entrepreneurs in our programme, we are also inviting other people to put up their stalls. At the market, there will be food, sweet treats and mostly handmade products,” said Mwaura.

He added that the funds raised will also enable them to empower more people in the communities in which they operate.

The market will be held from 8.30am to 2pm.
