The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) recently appealed to healthy, eligible blood donors to donate and help prevent blood shortages as their stocks are still low due the scarcity of mobile blood drive venues.

Chief Operations Officer, Ravi Reddy said as the country continues to emerge from the Covid-19 pandemic, the need for blood products is rapidly starting to increase.

Sister Zainab Mahomed from SANBS said collecting blood has been a massive challenge due to Covid-19 and there are many people in need.

“Most donors are hesitant to donate in fear of possibly contracting the virus. We can assure donors that we have stringent measures in place to ensure the safety of all our donors,” she said.
