Waterfall College celebrates top achievers

WITH a scaled down annual Speech Day due to Covid-9 restrictions, but no less significant, Waterfall College celebrated the resolve of its matric learners to the theme of 2020 vision: the audacity of hope.

The guest speaker, Matthew Willman, encouraged the Class of 2020 to harness their imagination and ability to contribute positively to the world around them.

The school's principal, Jeanette van der Merwe, said, “You have made history as the class of 2020. You have experienced a year like no other – overcoming unimaginable challenges and disappointments to show incredible resilience – showing commitment to your studies, and finding time to laugh and to build relationships with peers and teachers.”

It was also an opportunity to give thanks for the dedication of the school's staff, who maintained a full lesson timetable, with minimal disruption, throughout lockdown, sacrificing much to continue the education of the learners.

The Kriel Family Trophy for Dux of School 2020 was awarded to Ruby Reim and Proxime Accessit to Dux was awarded to 2020's head boy, Andrew Done.

In her tribute to the matrics, the head of academics, Vivienne Lamplough, said, “You are about to close this chapter on your school life and, for now, I would like to suggest we don't give it a title. Perhaps, in time, you will remember this as more than just a Covid year, it may well be the year that makes all the difference in how you see your place in the world and the difference you make in it. 2020 has prepared you uniquely to write the next and, without a doubt, most beautiful chapter in your lives. Take all your knowledge, all your skills, all of your light and compassion and fearlessness into the world. Hold close all you learnt this year about what matters most to you. Embrace the change.”
