Job-seeking mum distraught after brazen Pinetown robbery

Zibuyile Khwela was on her way to place a job advert when she was robbed of her cellphone and wallet.

A MARIANNHILL woman, who was on her way to an appointment, was robbed of her wallet and cellphone just after 11am today, (Thursday, 29 October.)

Zibuyile Khwela, who has been working as a caregiver for 13 years, said she was walking on Escom Road after getting off a taxi in Josiah Gumede Road.

The mother of three said a man, driving a silver grey car, approached her and offered her a lift.

“I told him that I was almost near my destination. He drove off, stopped and reversed.”

“He grabbed my bag, opened it and returned it,” she said.

The shaken Khwela said it all happened so fast.

“I did not immediately realise that he took out my phone and wallet. When I opened the bag for the second time, I realised my belongings were missing,” said a distraught Khwela.

In her purse, Khwela said she had a bit of cash, her bank cards and most importantly her grant card.

“The grant money helps us keep food on the table. I lost my job in July and my husband’s job is not stable,” said Khwela, who also stays with her sister’s two children.

“I am very desperate for a job, how can a person be so cruel. I am just a mother who is trying to get a job and give my children and sister’s children a better life, it is so unfair,” she said.

After speaking to the Highway Mail about her traumatic ordeal, Pinetown police arrived at our office to help Khwela open a case.
