Hillcrest Rotary shares seeds of encouragement

Two of the Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust's dedicated staff members each received a community service award from the Rotary Club of Hillcrest.

THE Rotary Club of Hillcrest showcased the pure dedication of two Hillcrest AIDS Centre Trust’s (HACT) staff members by awarding each of them with an illustrious community service award.

“The experience we have had with HACT as a organisation is that its staff go above and beyond their job titles and we have seen it with the interaction now with the 1 000 Survival Garden Kit project. For their excellent work, we thought, as a club, we would like to recognise their tireless work by giving each of them a community service award,” said the Rotary Club of Hillcrest’s president, Dennis Wesley.

For the award, the club looks at either volunteers or staff who go above and beyond to assist the community.

“We look for people who stand out in assisting the community around them. We recognise this in Phindiwe Mashiloane and John Lund, as these two put in more than 110 per cent,” said Wesley.

He noted that the award is not handed out often to ensure that they continue to have meaning.

“HACT is proud to have John and Phindiwe’s dedication and community work acknowledged with these awards. Both of them are valued team members and both have been instrumental in the development of the community and home gardens for many years, including the more recent emergency response during Covid-19,” said HACT’s CEO, Candace Davidson.

The Rotary Club of Hillcrest is the lead in the Survival Kit project and is currently looking to spread it across KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

“We are now rolling out 300 survival kits, with 40 handed out in the Valley of 1 000 Hills and, when funds are available, another 40 on the way,” said Wesley.

If individuals or corporates would like to sponsor a whole kit, or part there of, contact Brigitte on 082 826 1451 or email brigitteg@hwthighway.co.za.

HACT launched a Home Garden project as part of its local Covid-19 relief efforts. The project, which involves supplying gogo (granny) headed households with vegetable seedlings to start a home vegetable garden, has already benefitted 220 homes.

The Home Gardens give needy families a sustainable source of nutrition that will help prevent hunger over the coming months of ongoing employment disruptions and loss.

“The supply of fresh, seasonal vegetables will also help to keep their immune systems strong and healthy,” said HACT’s Mashiloane.
