Covid-19 claims the lives of 12 taxi association members

The Clermont and KwaDabeka Taxi Association hosted a prayer to remember and honour those who have passed on.

THE Clermont and KwaDabeka Taxi Association are still coming to terms with the loss of 12 members who died from Covid-19 related illnesses.

On Thursday, 15 October, the members hosted a prayer to remember and honour those who have passed on.

Public relations officer of the association, Sunshine Ngwane said this came as a huge shock to them – they decided to unite in their faith and host a prayer.

Ngwane said their chairman, Mandla Mthethwa is an empathetic person who respects the associations’ members and commuters.

“This was also hosted on behalf of the taxi drivers and rank managers who also lost their lives because of this pandemic.”

He said as the association they have been adhering to regulations as their taxis are sprayed on a regular basis.

“We emphasise to our drivers that they should wear masks and sanitise regularly. The commuters are also not allowed to board without masks,” added Ngwane.

The association, which comprises of 256 members, has been in existence for more than 50 years and was started to ensure that the work runs smoothly and to encourage good relations and mutual support among all taxi drivers.

They transport commuters in Clermont, Pinetown, Westville and Durban among other areas.

On Monday, 19 October, it was reported that the global Covid-19 infections hit 39.8 million, with the death toll reaching 1.11 million. In South Africa, there have been 1,662 new cases, taking the total reported to 703,793. Deaths have reached 18,471 (a daily increase of 63), while recoveries have climbed to 634,543, leaving the country with a balance of 50,779 active cases.
