PHOTOS: Black mamba caught in Westville complex

The snake is between 1.7m and 1.8m in length.

LOCAL snake expert, Nick Evans retrieved a black mamba from the Lurie Park complex, which borders the Palmiet Nature Reserve, in Westville this afternoon.

The mamba was first spotted sunning itself on the roof of the house and was then seen going into the roof of the garage.

“The snake was curled up and very grumpy. It wasn’t wanting to attack or anything as, when I climbed up the ladder, its face was about half a metre from my face and it was just looking at me. It was very scared,” said Evans.

The snake tucked itself into a gap between the wall of the garage and a wall of the house and, with no way of getting it from inside the garage, Evans had no choice but to go in from above.

“I needed to break through the roof and eventually got it,” he said.

Evans described the snake as being underweight and noted that it is between 1.7 and 1.8m in length.
