Boy reunites with rescued duiker at CROW

Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife has hailed the 11-year-old as a hero.

SCELO Mkhize, who rescued a duiker a little more than a month ago, recently visited the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) and was reunited with the small antelope.

The 11-year-old was invited to the centre to see first-hand the difference he made to an animal’s life when he chose to rescue it from a rural area with hunting dogs.

“Scelo came across the scared, little duiker lamb while gathering firewood near a rural community in Botha’s Hill. He fell in love with her immediately, scooped her up and brought her home where he built a blanket fort for her to stay in,” said CROW’s spokesman, Alexandra Kögl.

Mkhize was determined to keep her but was told to return her to the bush, a decision that CROW believes would  would have led to her death. The non-profit organisation was contacted and collected the duiker.

“She is now thriving and growing by the day,” said Kögl. “Though we do not offer any tours of CROW, we made an exception for this special boy as we felt we wanted to encourage his obvious interest in animals and show him how his actions can change a life.”

Mkhize’s mom, Thembelihle and their neighbour, Malvern, joined in on the tour.

“Scelo got to see how the duiker he saved is thriving, he met a tortoise and an owl for the first time and even got to see a grown impala eating,” said Kögl.
