Water and sanitation plumbers and contractors down tools

The contractors are calling for those who were implicated in fraud and corruption to be removed.

CONTRACTORS and plumbers contracted by the Water and Sanitation Department have downed tools and are queuing, in their vehicles, at Halifax Road in Pinetown, following allegations of corruption.

The contractors marched to the City Hall on Tuesday, 29 September to hand over a memorandum.

During the march, the municipality was given seven days to respond.

Speaking on behalf of the contractors, Sandile Ndlovu said they are now frustrated as their issues with the department have been ongoing. We have been trying to address this issue for a long time, but we are being ignored. Among the plumbers demands is the removal of contractors who were implicated in fraud and corruption.

“Corruption within senior officials of the various departments, including finance, is part of a syndicate. We want all plumbers to be screened by producing identity documents, company name and registration documents, trade certificate, date tested at the municipality and who was the testing official,” said Ndlovu.

Early in September, a multi-disciplinary raid, comprising different units from the Hawks, was carried out in various parts of Durban to recover about R700 million stolen from Durban’s Water and Sanitation Unit through tender fraud and corruption.

Eighteen properties belonging to unit employees were targeted.
