Highway residents urged to be vigilant as house breaking cases spike
Police have advised the public not to leave valuables in their vehicles.
HIGHWAY police stations are urging residents to not leave their valuables exposed in their homes and vehicles as this entices criminals.
Westville SAPS communications officer, Capt Elizabeth Squires said they have noticed an increase in theft out of vehicles in garages in residential premises.

“We are urging the community not to leave valuables in their vehicles even though the vehicle is locked in the garage.”
“Suspects are gaining entrance to garages and breaking into the cars,” she said.
Hillcrest SAPS communications officer, Capt Linzi Smith said in the Hillcrest area house breakings seem to be on the increase and she urged the community to be more vigilant by ensuring equipment like bicycles, braai stands, garden tools etc are not visible in the garden or yard at night.

She also advised residents to keep security gates locked when doors are open.
“Items left in full view are precipitating factors in allowing perpetrators to come onto properties and to take these items including garden furniture. If doors and security gates are left open, it allows easy access,” said Smith.
She said homeowners should try and keep the entrance to the property and fencing clear of shrubs and bushes as this will provide more visibility and lighting to entrances. “Having bushes allows perpetrators to hide and wait for victims,” she said.
