VIDEO: Protesters disrupt traffic along M19

Traffic travelling westbound was affected.

PROTESTERS from the informal settlement along the M19 caused panic and alarm earlier this afternoon as they disrupted traffic along the busy highway with burning rubble and rocks.

The motive for the unrest remains unclear at this stage, said Andreas Mathios, Blue Security community and media liaison officer, who was at the scene.

He said a few ‘splinter groups’ who were involved were each ‘doing their own little thing’.

He said the protesters had been dispersed by two police officers.

“They will be patrolling the area and keeping an eye out on the situation,” he added.

He said the protest action affected westbound traffic.

“The policemen must be commended for going over and above the call of duty. Not only did they direct traffic away from the threat but they also moved the debris out of the way,” he said.
