Cash-in-transit employee shot during Pinetown heist

Paramedics said one man was shot while a second guard was injured during the incident.

A CASH-IN-TRANSIT employee was shot and injured during an armed robbery in Pinetown this morning, Monday, 5 October.

A gang of five armed men entered a supermarket as cash-in-transit employees were depositing cash into an ATM.

Blue Security’s community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios, said the gang then held up the cash-in-transit employees and one of the suspects fired three shots and hit one of the employees in the leg.

“He was shot in the right leg while, unsuccessfully, trying to run away with the trolley that was carrying four boxes of cash,” said Mathios.

ER24’s communications officer, Russel Meiring, said two of the security officers were injured during the cash-in-transit heist.

“One sustained minor soft tissue injuries while the other had sustained a gunshot wound to his buttocks,” said Meiring.

An undisclosed amount of cash was taken by the armed gang, who fled the scene in a white Toyota double-cab with no number plate. SAPS is investigating.
