Draft a free Will with local NGO

ProBono.org will be offering free Will drafting to marginalised, vulnerable and impoverished members of the community.

DURING Wills Week, from 26 to 30 October, ProBono.Org will draft free Wills for elderly residents with minimal estates.

The non-government organisation (NGO) provides free legal assistance to the financially needy, marginalised and vulnerable and specialises in the drafting of wills.

“We work with private attorneys to facilitate the access of quality services, pro bono, to those members of the public that are otherwise unable to afford the services of a legal practitioner,” said the regional director, Shamika Dwarika.

A Will or testament is a legal document by which a person, the testator, expresses their wishes as to how their property is to be distributed at death, and names one or more persons, the executor, to manage the estate until its final distribution.

The purpose of a Will is to ensure an orderly winding up of the financial affairs of the deceased, and the protection of the financial interests of the heirs.

“Our aim is to assist those who would otherwise not be able to access the services of a legal practitioner. Without the assistance provided by ProBono.Org, many people would be severely prejudiced. We have helped numerous people since our inception and despite the pandemic, we are, and will, continue to do so,” said Shamika Dwarika.

Due to the pandemic, the organisation will not be able to see clients in person and each resident who would like to have a free Will drafted, can contact them on the details below.

The organisation does not deal with any criminal matters but does assist with: consumer, housing and deceased estates (067 742 0371) as well as labour, refugee and family matters (067 756 8003). For general enquiries contact 067 739 2265 or email dbninfo@probono.org.za.
