Help Friends of K9 improve animal welfare in poor communities

The NPO believes that sterilisation is the most effective approach to curb the number of homeless animals that will end up malnourished and neglected.

SPAY Neuter Inoculate Project (SNIP), an outreach project driven by Friends of K9 Trust to assist the poorest communities with improved animal welfare, are appealing to the public to help them continue the work they do.

Friends of K9 Trust, a group of local residents with a great passion for dogs, sterilise and inoculate dogs and cats and assist families where there is little or no veterinary care available.

The Hillcrest-based trust was established in 2016 and officially registered in 2018 and is currently targeted at the Embo, Molweni and Shongweni community.

One of the trustees of the organisation, Michelle Brown said every donation goes towards their vet accounts for sterilisation and inoculation of rural/stray domestic animals.

“All funds received go towards sterries and vacs only. Our aim is to reduce overpopulation and suffering of rural domesticated pets and to curb the spread of rabies,” she said.

The animals who are in need of help are identified by their volunteers.

“These animals are taken to our vets, sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed and given tick/flea meds as well as anti-inflammatory drugs. The animals are returned to their owners on the same day along with a courtesy bag of donated goods such as dog food, dog bowl, treats, blankets as well as a handmade reusable shopping bag,” explained Brown.

An amount of R650 is used on each dog for the medical procedure.

She said they continue to assist these animals even after they have returned them to the owners.

“Any donated dog food, bowls, blankets and/or items for the families are provided to them as and when we receive donations. In addition, each family is provided with the educational booklet, My Dog “Inja Yami”, written in both English and Zulu. This booklet assists the family with much-needed info on how to care for their pets going forward,” she said.

According to Brown, the NPO sterilised 224 dogs and cats in 2019.
