Hatton Estate rallies for clean-up

More than 50 bags of rubbish were picked up throughout the Hatton Estate area during a two-hour clean-up.

WITH the start of Spring and the month of new beginnings, the Hatton Estate Neighbourhood Watch held a clean-up at the weekend and collected more than 50 bags of rubbish.

With a team of 40-strong, from eight to about 60 years old, they scoured the streets and verges to remove the copious amount of rubbish.

The neighbourhood watch’s Jenny Siepman said it was a way to encourage residents to love where they live during its ‘Verge out this Spring’ drive.

“Covid hasn’t been all bad. Our residents have started street groups and helped with night vigils from their yards, watching for unwanted visitors to our area. “This has brought streets together and people have gotten to know their neighbours,” said Siepman.

Two weeks ago the residents took part in an Umbilo River clean-up along Gordon Road.

“The river and road clean-ups will be an ongoing thing. Hatton Estate Neighbourhood Watch is a family. We have care groups, pets groups, buy and sell groups, street groups and emergency groups. It’s free to all of our residents and our emergency phone is monitored 24/7/365,” she said.

The group’s emergency and info line is 063 360 5305.
