Highway Mail’s Tarryn claims coveted sales award

Highway Mail's sales representative, Tarryn Kumm claimed a highly sought after award at the company's annual Caxton awards event.

ACROSS the entire brand in South Africa, the Highway Mail’s Tarryn Kumm was recognised as the top Sales Representative of the Year during the recent virtual Caxton Awards.

The caring and determined powerhouse, who has been with the company for 13 years, said one of the main reasons she won the highly desired award because of the constant support she receives from her loving son, family and friends.

How did it feel when you were named as the winner of the award?
It was amazing! I honestly did not believe it!

What were the criteria you needed to meet to apply for the title?
I needed to have reached print and digital targets for 2019 and show a growth in revenue. I also had to pass a secret caller test, do a written exam and do a mock client presentation to four judges in Johannesburg.

How did the lockdown affect you as a salesperson?
Sales is hard generally and, sometimes, you can get into a slump when figures aren’t met or clients are unhappy. To add Covid-19 on top of this was hard, but it made me focus more and really push myself.

How did you put yourself into a positive mindset to persevere?
Definitely my my 10-year-old son – he is the most amazing little soul and my biggest fan. He keeps me going and is my light at the end of the tunnel. My family and friends as well. My family are very close and we are always there for each other, no matter what. I love to exercise so, to burn off my stress, I train at least four times a week for one hour.

How have you seen yourself grow as a salesperson during that time?
When I first started at Caxton, I was this very shy, withdrawn young girl. I believe I have become a much stronger and confident lady during my time here. I have experienced and learnt a lot, which has influenced my growth tremendously.

What advice do you have for others in the field during this difficult time?
Positivity! Positivity! Positivity! Know that this too shall pass and good things will come. Allow time for yourself. If you are feeling overwhelmed, take a break and some time for yourself – breathe.

What are your top motivational quotes?
Always find the light and try to see the positive or good in every situation

Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
Happy – and a mom to a 15-year-old. Goodness! I love what I do and I am happy and grateful with what and who I have in my life.

If there is one place you wish you could go to to celebrate this achievement, where would it be?
As long as I am with my loved ones I’m happy. I do enjoy any place in the bush with animals.

When you are not at work, what do you do to relax?
What does this ‘wind down’ mean? My life is hectic and constantly busy. I love to train and work out and, if I’m not doing that, I enjoy staying home, relaxing in bed with a good thriller.
