RESIDENTS across Upper Highway took to social media recently to raise their concerns over a fire at the Shongweni Landfill Site that EnviroServ, the managing agent for the site, soon after reported as arson.
According to EnviroServ Waste Management’s CEO, Dean Thompson, the fire started at about 6.10am on the side of Valley 2, in an area that is said to be separate from the current working area.
He said that as soon as they were made aware of the on-site fire, all firefighting measures were deployed.
“eThekwini emergency services assisted with extinguishing the fire and all relevant authorities were alerted. Once on site, the fire department, together with staff, immediately contained the fire,” said Thompson.
He reported that the fire was extinguished by 10am and all smouldering was eliminated before 11am.

“Our investigations indicate that it was arson and a case has been opened with SAPS. We already have comprehensive fire mitigation protocols in place. These are being reviewed and will be modified where appropriate,” he said.
All of its existing security and surveillance on site has been increased.
“Potential emissions from the site are well controlled and monitored, with stringent oversight by the authorities. Hydrogen sulfide concentrations, being of particular relevance, are significantly below World Health Organization guidelines,” said said Thompson.
