Locals gather for change in SA

Old Main Road in Hillcrest came alive at the weekend as motorists were encouraged to hoot to support the movement's stance against corruption.

MORE than one hundred people, gathered in small pockets along Old Main road in Hillcrest, donned their black and white t-shirts in support of the Move ONE Million drive at the weekend.

The Facebook group, which now has more than 540 000 likes, was founded on 20 July 2020 by the man behind the #ImStaying Facebook page, Jarette Petzer. The group’s aim is to have one million people join together in a peaceful protest across the country and abroad.

“To show our force, we need not raise our voice. The sheer numbers of purposeful protesters alone will make a statement that the world will not be able to ignore,” it said. “Either we stand together united as one, or we fall divided as individuals. Our aim is to get one million people to take hands in peaceful protest across the country and abroad. To show our force, we need not raise our voice. The sheer numbers of purposeful protesters alone will make a statement that the world will not be able to ignore.”

Local supporter of the movement, Gregg Clarke, said, “There have been so many groups on social media representing different movements, this (the Move ONE Million) is all regardless of race and religion.

“If you care about this country and its future, we want you. It’s time for individuals to stand up and be counted,” he said.

“The important thing about today is it is not a strike, march or protest. It is an awareness campaign to promote what the Move One Million Movement stands for, to inform those who don’t know about it, and prompt others to get involved,” said Clarke.

The national movement was also supported by people from across the globe.
