Matthew makes the most of lockdown

Thomas More College's high school SPAR Star of the Month - August 2020.

THOMAS More College’s Matthew Rall is the school’s high school SPAR Star of the Month.

Matthew approached his dad, Derek, at end of June and told him the Covid-19 pandemic and the lockdown situation was frustrating him. He felt he needed a goal and also wanted to get rid of the angst and negative emotions the pandemic was causing. His aim was to cycle 1 000km for the month of July and wanted to complete this achievement with his dad.

Derek worked long hours through the lockdown and Matt saw this as an opportunity to chat and connect with his father away from any form of technology.

Together they planned their route and decided that to achieve it, they would need to ride at least 35km per day. This could also only be done when his dad arrived home from work in the evenings. Some days were bitterly cold, windy and even rainy but they were determined.

They completed their personal challenge three days before month end and it helped with Matthew’s mind-set as it gave him time to bond with his dad and it taught him, with planning and perseverance the victory is awesome when the task is completed.

“Well done to both Matthew and his dad, Derek, for sticking it through and achieving their goal,” said Thomas More College’s admissions and marketing co-ordinator, Juliet Hartley.
