Highway couple share 50 years of golden marriage

The local couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 15 August.

IT has been 50 years since Dewald and Sharon Ann Smit said the words ‘I do’ and the couple said the love they have for one another has only continued to blossom.

The couple first met in December of 1968 at the Stella Sports Club and in 1969 he popped the important question.

They were married at the Manning Road Methodist Church on 15 August 1970 and, for their honeymoon, they chose to spend it in Margate.

They both agreed that it was the beaches that attracted them to the spot.

As a couple, they have two favourite travel destinations, their parent’s farm in Zeerust and Lake St Lucia.

Sharon has worked in a variety of fields, from secretarial work to newspaper and Liberty Life to her current job at Lakeside Equipment.

Dewald worked for the railways and then for the city (known then as Durban Corporation). Although now retired, Dewald also ran his own construction company.

They have three children, Tyrone, Shaun and Natalie and are the proud grandparents of two.

In their spare time, Sharon enjoys working out and gardening while Dewald can either be found in the garage or putting his green fingers to the test.

The top three items on their bucket list include a trip overseas, a holiday in Cape Town and a flight in a helicopter.

To celebrate their anniersary, the Smits travelled to a local game lodge and spa and signed up for a game drive.

The secret to their successful marriage is to give and take and constant communication.
