Waterfall couple celebrates 50 years of love

The Waterfall couple will celebrate the milestone on Saturday, 29 August.

LOVING Waterfall couple, Graham and Elizabeth (Liz) Borresen, will celebrate a golden 50 years of marriage on Saturday, 29 August.

Graham is a true Durbanite but Liz only moved to South Africa in 1967, where she joined her parents and sister, once she completed her nursing training in the UK.

Liz and her family had previously resided in Kenya where Liz matriculated.

“The Lord took her all over the place before finally bringing her to find me in Durban,” Graham smiled.

Graham and Liz (nee Humpage) first met early in 1969 at their church’s youth group.

He bent the knee and popped the question on 31 January in 1970 and seven months later the couple tied the knot.

The couple on their wedding day in 1970.

They had a three week honeymoon trip to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and the visit included seeing the Victoria Falls and Kariba Dam.

Liz, a nursing sister, still works at a small rest home in Waterfall and Graham runs Gra’s Travel Services to help senior citizens with their shopping or to visit doctors, dentists or hairdressers.

“Trips to the airport were also common, to help folk in the current lockdown situation,” he said.

To mark their big day, they hope their family in Johannesburg will join them for a celebration.

The couple are committed Christians and they say this has been the most important aspect in the success of their marriage.

They now attend and are involved in the ministry of the Waterfall Baptist Church.

“We are so thankful to reach this milestone and look forward to the years ahead,” said Liz.
