Krantzkloof Nature Reserve warns of massive fine, jail time for defacing heritage resources

First time perpetrators could be fined an amount not exceeding R5 million or face a five-year jail sentence.

THE Krantzkloof Nature Reserve warned residents that defacing its cultural heritage resources could culminate in jail time or a fine of up to R5 million.

The reserve’s manager, Waldo Bekker, said, “It is a shame that some visitors have no appreciation for the beauty of nature and find it necessary to deface the trees, rocks and other surfaces in the reserve.”

The reserve released a statement that noted, in terms of the Regulations for the Proper Administration of Nature Reserves (Sections 8, 19, 20 to 26, 33 to 37, 42, 45 to 48 and sections 51 to 54), this constitutes an offence.

“In the case of a first conviction, a fine may be imposed not exceeding R5 million or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years. In the case of a second or subsequent conviction, to a fine not exceeding R10 million or imprisonment for a period not exceeding 10 years or in both instances to both a fine and such imprisonment,” said the reserve.
