Bikers raise funds for Giba Gorge guard

Mandla Shezi who has worked at Giba Gorge for many years struggled to get to work after his bike was stolen at his home.

GOING to work and then back home every day became a challenge for a Giba Gorge security guard after his bike was stolen.

One of the regular riders at Giba Gorge was touched by Mandla Shezi’s story and shared it with other regular mountain bikers.

Chris Wright said they got to know Mandla very well as he mans the security boom on the road that leads into the entrance to Giba Gorge from the St Helier Road side.

“He has been working there for many years so we were touched when we heard the news that the bike which Mandla uses to get to work every day was stolen from his house in Shongweni,” said Wright.

The group of cyclists started their search for a bike and raised funds from donations within a few groups and were able to purchase a really good bike from one of the riders.

“We got it properly serviced with new tyres and presented this to Mandla. The cyclists raised just more that R5000 for this bike which is what they were aiming for. We also gave him a lock for the bike to prevent the same from happening to him again, with a few extras to help him,” said Wright.

Shezi said he was beyond grateful for what the cyclists did for him.

“My bicycle was stolen at a very critical time of the Covid-19 pandemic.”

He said he struggled to get to work because there was a shortage of taxis and the fare was a huge issue also.

“So when I was presented with this bike I was very happy. I cannot thank them enough because that bicycle was everything to me and now my life is back to normal,” he said.
