2.5m black mamba caught in Dawncliffe

The snake was seen by police while they were attempting to catch suspected thieves in Dawncliffe yesterday.

LOCAL snake catcher, Nick Evans’ mamba drought came to an abrupt end when he caught a 2.5m black mamba in Dawncliffe yesterday.
“Police in the neighbourhood were chasing suspects who were trying to break into a home. As they got to the bottom of the property, they bumped into a large black mamba. I only wish I was watching this happen,” said Evans.
SAPS member, Wynand Laatz contacted Evans and requested he attend the scene.

“I ran out of the house, jumped in my car and made the three or four minute drive at speed. I ran towards him (Laatz) and, as I approached him, put my foot on some chopped bougainvillea branches. That briefly ended my chase,” said Evans.
He found the mamba hiding behind a rock and, when it stuck its head out, he caught it with the tongs. Evans said the snake went ‘ballistic’ and believed it must have been lying in the 30C sun for a while before it was caught.
“Eventually though, I had it secured. An extremely rushed and adrenaline pumping rescue, but fun nonetheless,” said Evans.
Nick Evans has a permit and will respond to call outs that involve highly venomous snakes found around the home. Residents can contact him for advice and to help with snake identification. Contact Nick on 072 809 5806.
