According to the Queensburgh Fire Department station commander on duty, by 2pm the fire was under control and both lanes of the road were open to traffic.

“Metro police are still in attendance and currently the scene is awaiting a tow truck to remove the front end of the truck which is the only part that was on fire. The cargo was unaffected,” said station commander Shaun Singh.

Singh said the truck trailer was carrying a product called manganese but it had not been affected by the fire.

Manganese is a transition metal with a multifaceted array of industrial alloy uses, particularly in stainless steels.

“There was one green code patient who was the driver, who suffered from minor smoke inhalation,” said Singh. “The brigade used water to extinguish the fire in the cab.”

Foam was used to extinguish the fire in the diesel tank.

“The truck cab which was still on the scene was off on the left hand emergency lane waiting to be towed away and caused minimal disruption to traffic flow,” said Singh.
