On Thursday, 30 July, the Mariannhill/Mariannridge community hosted a candlelight prayer to end the month and to remember the women and children who have lost their lives through gender-based violence.

Skeef, who is the PRO of the Mariannhill CPF, pointed out that the public is not really aware of Men’s Month.

“That is so unfortunate as the month could be used to create awareness on lots of issues that men are faced with. As a nation, we need to dig deeper into what leads to gender-based violence. We have witnessed an increase in such cases especially since the start of lockdown.

“I am also not perfect and I have made mistakes. Recently, I made a decision to quit alcohol. I made that decision after asking myself what kind of example I was setting for my children,” said Skeef.

He said alcohol changes a person. “I have been married for 21 years and I have two beautiful daughters. I want my children to look up to me so that when they get partners, they would know how they need to be treated and not settle for less,” he added.

According to Skeef, being a man does not give a person the right to use women as punching bags. It also doesn’t automatically make the male superior to the woman.

“We need to respect women and treat them as our equals, it is never too late to change.”

He added that boys as well as girls needs to be taught at a young age to respect one another, take responsibility for their actions and know that every action has consequences.
