WATCH: Queensburgh business owners label gym ban as ‘irrational’

The fitness industry is hoping the national gym protest on Wednesday, 5 August, will help to put pressure on government to lift restrictions on gyms re-opening.

A FAMILY run gym business, which until Covid-19 had been running for more than 40 years, is on the brink of collapse.

Nick Rust owns a community gym in Hillary and today said his gym, Better Bodies Health Studio, stands empty.

His frustration is shared by Body Physique owner Wayne Rust.

The two have joined their counterparts in the fitness industry on a nationwide protest against the continued closure of gyms during the lockdown.

The protest is headed by FitSA, the association of health and fitness clubs in the country representing gym owners and trainers.

It labelled the extended ban on gyms reopening as being ‘irrational’.

A statement released by FitSA Public Relations Officer, Magdaleen Botes, said the industry employs around 29 000 people.

It urged gym owners and members to make their dissatisfaction known by protesting peacefully outside their local gyms between noon and 2pm today (5 August).

Wayne will be heeding the call outside his gym, Body Physique Gym from noon today.
