Five robbers found in possession of police uniform arrested, appear in Durban court

FIVE men made their first appearance in Durban Magistrate’s Court today, Wednesday, 5 August, facing robbery charges after they were arrested by police officers from Sydenham.

This comes a week after the suspects were arrested on Wednesday, 29 August.

According to Col Thembeka Mbele, provincial SAPS spokesperson police officers from Sydenham SAPS were patrolling near New Germany when they spotted a white VW Polo with no registration plates travelling along the same road as them.

“The police officers followed the vehicle with the intention of investigating their suspicions. They were able to intercept the vehicle and the five occupants in the car were searched. Police officers seized two firearms, cellphones, a police uniform and cash that were found in the suspects’ possession,” said Mbele.

All five suspects were arrested and detained for further investigation.

Initial investigations revealed that some of the cellphones and cash were robbed from a business owner in Cato Manor on Tuesday.

“The victim was contacted and a case of business robbery was opened at the Cato Manor police station for investigation. Investigations in the involvement of the suspects in other crimes are ongoing,” said Mbele.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lt Gen Khombinkosi Jula praised the team for the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of stolen items.
