The new clinic, which offers ample space, will incorporate whole blood and plasma donations.

Sister Ingrid Marlton appealed for more donors to avail themselves as blood stocks are low.

“We appeal to all blood types, the blood donated saves so many lives,” she said.

Donor relations practitioner, Neelashan Govender said people should truly support the South African National Blood Service SANBS even when they them at the malls.

“At the moment, we can not go to private institutions and organisation due to the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

As the winter chill starts to intensify, SANBS is anticipating critical blood supply shortages.

“At a time when people are focussed on staying warm and avoiding contracting the Covid-19 infection, little concern is available for much else. We are hoping, however, that donors who are due to donate are able to find the time to make a difference to the lives of others by donating blood,” said SANBS chief marketing officer, Silungile Mlambo.

Mbambo said they anticipate added pressure on the blood supply due to the cold temperatures and the added effects of the Covid-19 outbreak could see the number of eligible donors decrease significantly.

She added that the safety of donors, staff and overall South African community are of utmost importance to the SANBS and extensive precautionary measures have been taken to ensure donor safety.”

All persons accessing donor clinics are thoroughly screened and anyone exhibiting flu-like symptoms or symptoms of infections is advised to delay donation until they are well.”

In order to donate blood a donor has to meet the following requirements:

-Be between the ages of 16 – 65

– Weigh over 50kg- Have a light meal before donating

– Lead a sexually safe and healthy lifestyle.
