Upon searching the vehicle further, it was established that the vehicle had a bullet hole on the rear door. The officers also recovered hub caps, registration number plates and a beanie with dreadlocks in the boot.

“It was established that one suspect had a conviction for robbery and two other suspects had cases of robbery pending in KwaMashu and Pietermaritzburg.”

Rhymes said further investigation revealed that these men were involved in a business robbery that just took place in Mayville, where a foreigner was robbed.

“Two cellphones belonging to the victim were recovered. The victim was contacted by police, just as he was on his way to Mayville SAPS to open up his case. He was shocked and pleased to hear an arrest had been made and his phones recovered,” explained Rhymes.

All five suspects are expected to appear in court on Friday, 31 July.

“Linkages will be gathered from other surrounding policing areas to ensure these criminals face all the cases they are found involved in around Durban,” said Rhymes

eThekwini district commissioner, General Vukani Mgobhozi, said, “These are outstanding arrests and recoveries of illegal firearms made by SAPS. Their quick team work and response to information removed five dangerous habitual robbers from our streets.”
