Local NPC rescues pup for sale at Westville traffic lights

The Kloof and Highway SPCA urges motorists not to purchase puppies that are being sold on the side of the road.

THE members of Animal Antics Pet Rescue, a local non-profit company, were able to rescue one of the puppies for sale at the traffic lights near the Pavilion Shopping Centre in Westville yesterday.

The directors of the organisation, Sam De Wet and Ally Du Plessis, said they were alerted to the act of alleged animal cruelty via social media.

“A woman’s husband went there and kept the children busy until we arrived. Unfortunately, when we got there, there was only one puppy left,” said De Wet.

A Kloof and Highway SPCA inspector arrived shortly afterwards.

“We tried to get the boy to take us to the mom and other pups, but he refused,” said De Wet.

The man who alerted the NPC to the sale of the puppies offered to take in the rescued pooch.

“Thank you to everyone who was involved in rescuing this puppy,” said the Kloof and Highway SPCA’s Barbara Patrick.

“We have to work together as when the SPCA vehicle is seen, the puppy sellers leave.”

Patrick urged the public not to purchase puppies for sale on the side of the road.

“You are encouraging more cruelty and puppies to be bred,” she said.

“If you see someone selling puppies this way, call the SPCA immediately and try to get the puppies without paying any money.”
