Hillcrest protest highlights restaurant plight amidst lockdown restrictions

Ten restaurant workers have already been retrenched from the once popular Hillcrest establishment.

HILLCREST restaurant, Mozambik was one of the many restaurants across the country which took part in the ‘million seats on the street’ protest to appeal to government to relax Covid-19 regulations.

Although restaurants have re-opened for sit-down services, under strict regulations, no alcohol may be consumed on the premises.

Mozambik restaurant owner, Brad Ayerst said the industry has been hit hard by the pandemic.

“The strict regulations do not only affect us as owners only but the staff and their families,” he said.

Ayerst added he already had to retrench 10 of his staff members.

“It was one of the hardest things we had to do but the longer they keep these regulations, the tougher things will get.

“The alcohol ban has made our situation worse, we are like the entertainment industry, people come here to enjoy a meal and a drink, at least if the president can allow us to serve alcohol maybe up until 8pm.”

Ayerst said they understand the seriousness of this pandemic but they have adhered to all regulations.

“We sanitise the restaurant about four or five times a day, we have halved our seats.”

Another Hillcrest restaurant, Butcher Boys is set to shut down due to insurmountable losses, this, according to Bradley Hollis, part-owner of the Butcher Boys franchise, who spoke to our sister newspaper, Berea Mail.
