Pinetown couple toasts to 50 years of marriage

Hugh and Sheila Pritchard tied the knot at the Pinetown Christ Church on 11 July 1970.

MARRIAGE is certainly not a bed of roses, but Pinetown couple, Hugh and Sheila Pritchard, have proven that it’s definitely worth it.

The couple, who tied the knot at the Pinetown Christ Church on 11 July 1970, celebrated their 50 wedding anniversary on Saturday.Sheila grew up in England and Hugh was born in Kenya and grew up Australia.

They both moved to South Africa when they were in their late teens.

“I was working with his sister and his mother invited me to his 21st birthday party,” said Sheila.

Hugh said she looked like a nice, quiet girl while Sheila admitted that she liked Hugh the very first time she saw him.

“He was kind and well spoken, he was a true gentleman and still is. He is a very patient man, I must admit I don’t have much patience,” said Sheila.

Hugh and Sheila got married a year after dating.

“Our relationship was going extremely well and I thought why wait,” said Hugh.

In the Pritchards household there is no boss or senior.

“We work well together, we are homely people who enjoy doing house chores and we love the same things,” said Sheila.

Despite the times in a marriage when you sometimes feel like giving up, they advised young couples to communicate and talk about their problems.

They have two children, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
