“Do not leave items or equipment outside that will encourage them to enter the premises,” advised Smith.

Smith also shared some awareness tips should people find themselves cornered by criminals.

She advised people to cooperate with the perpetrator/s for their own safety and the safety of others.

“Comply with their demands. Remain calm and think clearly. If you have a silent alarm and can reach it without being noticed, use it. Otherwise, wait until the robber leaves.”

” Make sure the sales counter can be seen clearly. Make sure windows or doors are not obstructed from the inside of your business. Don’t chase or follow the robber out of your place of business.”

She added that if  your business does not have a generator available, the purchasing of solar bulbs, lighting etc is highly advisable to keep your business lit up if operational during these ‘dark times’. “Keep the entrances clear and well lit. Staying vigilant at all times can help prevent a traumatic incident,” said Smith.

People should report incidents immediately to the police by calling Crime Stop on 0860 10111.
