Bellevue’s soup kitchen campaign comes to an end

The local eatery helped make nearly 6 000 litres of stew for families impacted by the Covid-19 lockdown.

THE Bellevue bucket campaign was initiated by Julika Falconer (Zero2Five) and Guy Cluver (Bellevue Café) in the last week of April and it helped provide more than 6 600 buckets of stew to families in need during the 11-week period.

The project also attracted overwhelming support in monetary and product donations from local companies, schools and individuals.

With the project coming to an end after Mandela Day, the group looks back and reflects on the tremendous support it has received.

“The donations allowed us to prepare 600 buckets of chicken stew each week,” said Julika Falconer. “The meals were cooked and distributed into various communities all over KZN each week.”

As Bellevue Café opened for trading on 10 July, the kitchen at Cotswold Downs with chef Byron Cavé kindly took over the community project.

In commemoration of Nelson Mandela’ birthday on 18 July, this week’s 670 meal buckets will be delivered with 670 special goodie bags for each family.

“Once again, the support has been tremendous and it seems only fit to close this project with a little get together at Bellevue Café on Mandela day, 18 July, to thank the donors, volunteers and supporters,” said Falconer.

She thanked Pure Beginnings for adding 670 organic hand washes, My SPAR for the donation of 670 blankets, FUTURELIFE for 670 loaves of brown bread, Ryan Ambler-Smith for 700 beanies, The Bespoke Amenities Co. for 700 hand sanitisers, Care for Education for the packs of LEGO, Marriott Asset Management for the face masks, St Mary’s DSG, Kloof for the donation of  bags, towels, peanut butter, tea and water bottles for extra spoiling and Illovo Sugar SA for the much-needed Covid-19 info brochures.

The value of each bag is about R500.

“We are so grateful for the community support we have received in the past the months and this campaign literally put the cherry on top. Madiba’s legacy, at its best,” said Falconer.
