Kloof’s Memorial Park receives a needed facelift

The popular Memorial Park is currently undergoing a mini upgrade.

WITH a short delay in plans due to the Covid-19 outbreak and the subsequent nationwide lockdown, the eThekwini Park, Recreation and Culture Unit has embarked on its project to improve Memorial Park in Kloof.

“We are pleased to advise that the work is now in progress. We have discussed the improvements with the Parks Department and are very appreciative that they are investing in the park to improve it,” said the Kloof Conservancy’s Paolo Candotti.

“Memorial Park is already one of the most popular parks in the Upper Highway area and the planned improvements should make the park even more attractive and enjoyable for all visitors.”

The improvements include upgrades to the signboards, which was completed earlier this year.

The two parking areas will be formalised and will include the introduction of designated bays to optimise the use of space.

A few new bridges will be installed and the path along the river, near Buckingham Road, will be paved.

The post and rail fencing will be replaced with new ones and, in some areas, double rail will be installed to make it higher.

“The post and rail fencing is purely for demarcation of the grasslands, wetlands and parking areas – no mesh wire fencing is involved,” said Candotti.

The planned completion date for the improvements and upgrades is the end of August.

“Originally, additional benches with cover were planned but this item is currently on hold. The Kloof Conservancy also plans to upgrade the two display boards later this year as funds become available,” said Candotti.

He urged visitors of the park to take particular care of their dogs while the contractors are on site.

“Do not allow the dogs to interfere with the contractors, some of whom may not be comfortable in the vicinity of dogs not on a leash. Please do assist to avoid any incidents,” said Candotti.

Bruce Thomson from The Kloof Project said, “We are heartened and grateful that the area is getting some positive attention from the authorities and their recognition of the importance of informally cordoning off the wild grasslands to ensure their preservation. Thanks to everyone involved.”

Ward 10 councillor, Tex Collins, welcomed the much-needed upgrade to the park and assured residents that none of its amenities would be removed.

“Residents need not worry as the project was budgeted for and needed to be used within the financial year, or it would be lost. This is also the only playground we have in Kloof for children,” he said.
