Armed robbers target bread delivery truck

The three robbers were driving a white VW Polo with no number plates.

THREE armed men stole goods from a bread delivery truck outside a tuck shop in Grassmere Drive in Nagina this morning.

According to the CPF chairman of Nagina Phase 2, Moses Pillay, the men arrived in an white VW Polo Classic with no number plates.

The driver of the bread delivery vehicle was reported to be inside the tuck shop when the armed men approached the four-ton truck.

“There was only one person who was in the vehicle, the assistant, who jumped out of the vehicle when the men pointed their firearms at the driver’s and passenger window. The assistant jumped out the vehicle. The men stole two cellphones and an undisclosed amount of cash,” said Pillay.

The DA PR councillor for Ward 13, Marlaine Nair, said she was not surprised that the crime took place as she was hijacked on the same road at gunpoint in January this year.

“Nagina residents have been experiencing ever-increasing hijackings and robberies. The local CPF must be commended on the excellent work that they have been doing in assisting to fight crime,” said Nair.

“I have previously met with the SAPS station commander to raise concerns of crime in the area. Unfortunately, it’s evident that there is a lack of sufficient vehicles to cover a vast area. I believe that active patrolling can act as a deterrent to crime. I also think that CPFs must be given more support from government in order to support them in their fight against crime,” she said.

Nair urged all residents to be vigilant and participate in community groups so as to be aware of the possible criminal activity in the area.
